OUR SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO BECOME A CELEBRITY PERSONAL ASSISTANT

If you always wanted to become a celebrity personal assistant but had no idea where to begin, read on! The information below can help you get started on your new career.

  • Start gaining experience by working in a secretarial/administrative position and work your way up to assisting top-level management. Assistants to top-level management of corporations (sometimes they are celebrities in their own right!) will know the challenges and pressures associated with handling such a demanding role.
  • If you are in a secretarial or administrative role and handle only the business aspect of the job, try to add the personal work so you also gain experience on that front. This will help you to quickly realize whether or not the position of a personal assistant is something you find both enjoyable and doable.
  • Almost any entry-level position can be a stepping-stone to success. For example, if you are working in broadcasting or film as a production assistant and excel at your job, you may be recognized and promoted to another position.
  • Working for a public relations firm, talent agency, or a celebrity's manager/lawyer/accountant/production company/studio, etc. might provide you with more opportunities.
  • Most assistant positions require at least basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and some knowledge of other software. The more you know, the better off you are!
  • Network, network, network! The power of networking is invaluable. Tell everyone you know what your goal is. Many PA's have obtained their job by word of mouth. What's that they say about there being six degrees of separation?
  • Use your college alumni association and look for people who are in industries in which you have an interest (entertainment, broadcasting, business, and public relations). Very often celebrity alumni attend functions... BE THERE! You never know whom you'll meet. Or write to an alum and ask if they can spare some time to chat with you about your goals. You'd be surprised how cooperative people can be!
  • Take the 3-hour seminar "Become a Celebrity Assistant" through The Learning Annex. NYCA Member Bonnie Low-Kramen, Asst. to Olympia Dukakis, teaches this course every three months. For more information, call The Learning Annex at 212-371-0280 or visit their website.
  • Order Bonnie Low-Kramen's new book called "Be the Ultimate Assistant: A celebrity assistant's secrets to success." The foreword is by Olympia Dukakis. Check out her website: www.BonnieLowKramen.com
  • Look in the New York Times (or a major newspaper in your city if you are not in the New York Metropolitan area) under Administrative Assistant/Executive Assistant. Very often Personal Assistant jobs are a subheading within a specific ad. This can help you locate the high-end agencies that deal with personal assistant positions.

Now you have the basic steps to get started on your new career. Once you've captured that PA position and have worked for a celebrity full time for at least three months, give us a call about joining New York Celebrity Assistants as an associate member! Good luck!
